Habitat partitioning among three predatory fish in a temperate reservoir

چکیده

The diversity of predatory species plays a key role in ecosystem functioning but our understanding the mechanisms underlying their coexistence is limited, particularly freshwater ecosystems. Northern pike Esox lucius, European perch Perca fluviatilis and pikeperch Sander lucioperca are three widespread lakes, where they often coexist. As potential competitors, we hypothesised that partitioning habitat determinant coexistence. This was tested by quantifying variability use tracking adult individuals Bariousses reservoir (France, 86.6 ha, mean depth 7.1 m). Specifically, investigated distribution along littoral–pelagic axes daily cycle across seasons. From littoral to pelagic waters were first found pike, then finally pikeperch. Pike closest surface while deepest. general pattern was, however, variable seasons with located upper layer summer during stratification. Individuals more evenly distributed axis closer bottom when water mixing (autumn, winter). In summer, used intensively zone daytime. Other did not show any diel change habitats. Our results highlighted associated among these predators, showing behaviour regarding characteristics. Now than ever, context global which modifies habitats, it crucial importance understand shape

Habitat Connectivity of Fish in Temperate Shallow-Water Seascapes

Movements of organisms comprise a fundamental aspect of coastal habitat connectivity. Determining the distribution and co-existence of habitat specialists and generalists in shallow-water seascapes leads to a better understanding of the strength of connectivity-driven community patterns in coastal areas. In this study, unbaited Remote Underwater Video (RUV) systems were used to examine habitat ...

Species partitioning in a temperate mountain chain: Segregation by habitat vs. interspecific competition

Disentangling the relative influence of the environment and biotic interactions in determining species coexistence patterns is a major challenge in ecology. The zonation occurring along elevation gradients, or at bioclimatic contact zones, offers a good opportunity to improve such understanding because the small scale at which the partitioning occurs facilitates inference based on experiments a...

Trophic interactions among three elasmobranch species coexisting in the Oman Sea: implications for resource partitioning

In this study, trophic interactions were studied among three elasmobranches including Iago omanensis, Rhinobatos punctifer and Torpedo sinuspersici coexisting in the depth ranging from 50 to 100 meters in the Oman Sea (Sistan and Balochistan waters). A total of 238 specimens were collected using industrial bottom trawlers of ‘FERDOWS’ during spring and summer,2014 and their stomach contents wer...

Community structure affects trophic ontogeny in a predatory fish

While most studies have focused on the timing and nature of ontogenetic niche shifts, information is scarce about the effects of community structure on trophic ontogeny of top predators. We investigated how community structure affects ontogenetic niche shifts (i.e., relationships between body length, trophic position, and individual dietary specialization) of a predatory fish, brown trout (Salm...
